Managing Multiple Domains: Parking

For those that don't already know, having domain names that contain the keywords that potential customers are searching for can greatly enhance your listing on search engines. What's the best way to bring these domains into use with your website? One way is parking.

If you register your domain through a reputable registrar such as 123reg or 1and1 you'll be able to log in to your account and manage each of your domain names. By doing this you can determine where each of your domains points - that is, which website is displayed when someone visits them.

Having more than one domain pointing to the same website is perfectly acceptable. On some (particularly shared) account packages you need to ensure that the domain names are parked in order to get the most out of them.

A domain that is parked in this way will work in exactly the same way as the domain on which it is parked. Take these two as an example:

http://www.emerg-in.com/blog/

http://www.emerginginnovations.co.uk/blog/

You will notice that both of these addresses go to exactly the same page. This page hasn't been replicated, it is simply being displayed because of the nature of the parking that has been set up.

Note also that a parked domain will allow you to set up multiple email addresses that span the different domains.

Setting up a parked domain can be done via your Control Panel for many hosting companies or, if you're an EI customer, we can assist without charge.
